How to use a vaporizer safely

The mabkhara (incense burner) is a traditional tool used for burning oud and incense, whether for special occasions or to fragrance the home. However, its use requires caution to ensure safety and avoid accidents such as fires or burns. In this blog, we will outline steps for using the mabkhara safely, with practical tips to enjoy the scent of incense without risks, whether you are using a traditional or electric burner, focusing on types of oud such as natural and manufactured oud.

1. Choosing the Right Mabkhara

  • Select a mabkhara made of heat-resistant materials such as ceramic, copper, or silver. Ensure it is stable with a wide base to prevent tipping.
  • Check for ventilation openings to allow airflow and prevent heat buildup.

2. Selecting a Safe Location

  • Place the mabkhara on a heat-resistant surface, such as a ceramic plate or metal stand.
  • Avoid placing it on flammable surfaces like untreated wood, fabric, or carpet.
  • Keep the mabkhara out of reach of children and pets.

3. Preparing the Charcoal

  • Use charcoal intended for incense, such as natural or quick-light charcoal.
  • Light the charcoal with a lighter or match in a well-ventilated area, and wait until it turns into glowing embers covered with a gray layer.
  • Warning: Do not use charcoal in closed rooms without ventilation, as the smoke may cause suffocation or irritation.

4. Placing the Incense

  • Place a small amount of natural oud (like Klakasi, Krisna, or Aquilaria) or manufactured incense on the burning embers. Start with a small quantity to avoid excessive smoke.
  • If using incense sticks (like Serene or others), light the tip of the stick, let it burn for a few seconds, then blow out the flame to release the aromatic smoke.

5. Burning Safely

  • Use the mabkhara handle (if available) to move it gently around the space, taking care not to touch the embers or hot parts.
  • To scent clothes, hold the mabkhara at a safe distance (15–20 cm) to avoid burns or damage.
  • If scenting a room, slightly open the windows to ensure ventilation.

6. Extinguishing the Mabkhara

  • After finishing, let the charcoal burn completely until it turns to ash, then dispose of it in a heat-resistant container.
  • Do not throw hot ash directly into the trash to prevent fires.
  • Wash the mabkhara after it has fully cooled to remove any remaining ash or resin.
